The Romanian army will receive the “Piranhas” of the domestic assembly

In October 2017, the Ministry of Economy of Romania and the General Dynamics European Land Systems Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding, in which it was planned in Bucharest to assemble the Piranha V armored personnel carriers.

The Romanian army will purchase 227 Piranha V armored vehicles under a contract valued at € 895 million ($ 1 billion), Warspot reports citing to defensenews.com. “Piranhas” should replace Soviet-designed armored personnel carriers, which are in service with the Romanian army.

According to the agreement, licensed production of combat vehicles will be established at the facilities of the Bucharest Mechanical Plant, which is a part of the national defense company Romarm. In total, Romania will collect 197 armored personnel carriers, another 30 will be delivered in ready-made form.

Piranha – family of multi-purpose wheeled armored vehicles, developed by the Swiss company Mowag, which since 2010 is part of the corporation General Dynamics. Piranha is made in the 4 × 4, 6 × 6, 8 × 8 and 10 × 10 versions and has the following options: armored personnel carrier, infantry fighting vehicle, combat reconnaissance vehicle, reconnaissance vehicle of RCBP (radiation, chemical, biological protection), command vehicle staff, armored recovery vehicle, ambulance a car.

Today, General Dynamics European Land Systems owns by factories in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and Switzerland, where the production of parts and the complex assembly of armored vehicles. Piranha armored vehicles have been in existence for five generations and are in service with more than 20 armies.
