Romania will spend $ 3.9 billion on «Patriots»

The Ministry of Defense of Romania signed a contract with the company Raytheon (USA) for the supply of Patriot missile systems. Romania will become the 14th country in the world, which is equipped with the Patriot air defense system, reports Warspot referring to the portal defensenews.com. (01.12.2017)

In April of this year, the Romanian Ministry of Defense sent a formal request to the American company Raytheon for the supply of “Patriots”. In July, it became known that a potential contract was approved by the US military department. The deal will amount to $ 3.9 billion.

On the 30th of November, 2017 the final contract was signed, and the parties began to implement it. Romania will receive seven Patriot modifications of Configuration 3+, equipped with radars, control stations, antennas, launchers and electric generators. The package includes 56 Patriot MIM-104E Guidance Enhanced Missile-TBM and 168 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement missiles. The key contractors under the contract are the companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

It is planned that the Patriot complexes will become part of the integrated Romanian air defense system, which already includes F-16 fighters. In 2016, the Romanian Air Force received the first batch of six fighters, as many more combat aircraft will be delivered in the near future. Romania became a member of NATO in 2004 and is gradually replacing Soviet weapons models with Western ones. In addition, the American complex of anti-missile defense Aegis Ashore, which is part of NATO’s general air defense system and is capable of intercepting short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles, is deployed on the territory of the country.
