Indonesia will purchase 5 new aircraft BTA C-130J “Super Hercules”

Center for analysis of world arms trade, the 6th of June. The Government of Indonesia has decided to purchase five new military transport aircraft C-130J “Super Hercules” of Lockheed Martin.

This, as Beritasatu.com source reports, was declared by the minister of defense of Indonesia Ryamizard Ryacudu.

According to the minister, the existing fleet of Hercules aircraft was mainly received as grants from the presence of neighboring states and is obsolete. In these conditions, the government intends to acquire new aircraft.

He also added that at the moment the Indonesian industry is not able to produce aircraft of this class, therefore, when buying new cars, the government would like to obtain technologies that will allow producing such aircraft in the future at national capacities.

As reported by Center for analysis of world arms trade, a month earlier, the Air Force commander of Indonesia Marshal Yuyu Sutisna announced some plans for the acquisition of aircraft in the coming years.

In particular, referring to the issue of updating the fleet of military transport aircraft, he noted that the most likely candidate for the purchase is the American C-130J “Super Hercules”. The aircraft of the state enterprise “Antonov” and Airbus were also considered.

The commander then linked the most likely choice of the C-130J to the fact that the Air Force did not have to build a new infrastructure for the operation of these aircraft.

Comments from the Center for analysis of world arms trade:

In connection with the decision to purchase five C-130J “Super Hercules” remains uncertain about the previously announced purchase of new military transport aircraft A-400M of the company Airbus Defense and Space.

As already reported byCenter for analysis of world arms trade, for the first time the Minister of Defense of Indonesia Ryamizard Ryacudu announced plans to purchase a small number of BTA A-400M aircraft in May 2016.

In January 2017, it was reported that the House of Representatives Commission for Defense, Intelligence and Foreign Affairs of the Indonesian Parliament approved the allocation of about $ 2 billion for the purchase of five A-400M aircraft, with the proviso that the last three aircraft will be equipped with equipment at the state enterprise company PT Dirgantara in Bandung.

In March 2017, it became known that Airbus Defense and Space began negotiations with Indonesian companies and the Government of Indonesia on the terms of the sale of aircraft.

On March 7, 2018, the Indonesian Air Force confirmed its intention to purchase new A-400M aircraft and announced that it was planning to purchase two cars to provide cargo transportation between the western and eastern regions of the country. It was assumed that the owner of the aircraft would be state-owned company PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia, and the personnel of the Air Force will serve and pilot them. Information about the planned delivery dates and the cost of the contract was not reported.
